7 reasons why Engagement Photography sessions are an awesome idea!
I like to offer engagement photography (also called pre-wedding) sessions to all of my clients. And I am often asked if they are necessary and what the benefits of doing such a shoot before the wedding day are.
Most couples getting married lead very hectic lives, working or studying and also planning their dream wedding, so time can be precious.
But below I will outline some of the key benefits of having and engagement session and why you should book one in today.
1. Engagement photography sessions are good practice
An engagement photography session can be great practice for you and your partner when it comes to being photographed together. Let’s face it, the majority of us aren’t professional models who know exactly what to expect on a photo shoot. So an engagement photography session can be a great way of experiencing how it feels to be in front of the camera. As the session progresses, the nerves and apprehension disappear and you will find you really start to really relax and be yourself. Practice is also hugely beneficial for those prospective grooms out there who say they ‘hate photos’. The engagement shoot will put them at ease and show how relaxed it can be and that they can look great in photos.
2. Get to know your photographer
As the engagement photography session continues you will also get to know your photographer better. Chatting between photos and locations is all part of the fun and means on the wedding day it will feel like it’s a friend hanging with you and taking your photos instead of a complete stranger. Your photographer will also learn more about you as a couple and how you like to interact together, what your partner does that makes you laugh, how you like to hug…. This will lead to much more connected photos not just on the engagement shoot but also on the wedding day. This will also help them capture more of those special moments on the wedding day because they will have a greater understanding about you as a couple.
3. Experience special locations
One of the key bonuses I find for engagement shoots is that couples get to have their sessions in places that might be special or significant to them but which they are unable to use on their wedding day due to distance and time constraints. Their wedding may be based in the city but they met on the beach or he proposed in a field. An engagement photography session can use those special places which will make the images much more meaningful.
4. Pets can come too!
Often on wedding days, couples poor little fur babies have to be left at home and miss out on all the fun. But not on an engagement shoot! I love when couples incorporate their pups, cats and even horses into their sessions. For many couples, their pets are a huge part of their lives and deserves to be captured in some professional photos.
5. Engagement Photos can be used for the wedding
You will receive many gorgeous images from your engagement shoot and the great thing is, you can use those images for many things leading up to your wedding!
Save the Date cards
Social Media announcements
Prints on wedding gift table
Special Guest Signing Photobooks (Contact us about those btw!) Engagement prints also look great in frames around the house too. They have a beautiful informal look that couples just love.
Trial run for Hair and Makeup on your engagement photography session
Hair and makeup can be a big thing for many brides that requires a lot of trust in the skills of the hair and makeup artists. So timing your engagement photography session for the same day as your hair and makeup session can be a great way of testing how your hair and makeup will look in professional photos. That way you will have even more trust in your hair and makeup artists come the wedding day. You will also look totally amazing and Instagram worthy in your engagement photos! 😉
You have fun !
Engagement photography sessions can be a lot of fun for couples. Girls often buy that gorgeous dress they have been eyeing off in the shop window or they finally get to wear their favourite from their cupboard. Guys often scrub up amazingly well too. In the lead up to a wedding it can be very stressful, so to take an afternoon off and spend some quality time with your partner just walking, talking, kissing and cuddling can be very relaxing and a lot of fun!
