New York portrait shoot with Fuji X-E1

Instead of posting a wedding this week I thought I would showcase something a bit different. A review of sorts of my general travel and carry around camera: the Fuji X-E1.

Earlier in the year I was lucky enough to travel to the United States for a photography conference. While over there I met up with past wedding clients of mine Hanh and Wilson in New York and we spent a couple of hours having a bit of fun in the Big Apple.

Instead of taking my full Pro Nikon D4s kit, I opted for the much lighter and travel friendly Fuji X-E1 and a selection of it’s lovely lenses. The Fuji kit did really well earlier in the trip in capturing Yosemite and Death Valley landscapes. But I knew taking the little Fuji into a portrait/street style of shooting would be quite the challenge.

But it was more than up for this challenge. Focus was snappy and sure for the most part, especially when using the 14mm f2.8. But even the Fuji 35 1.4 did quite well in achieving focus in challenging backlit situations.

The files themselves from the Fuji X-Trans sensor were beautiful and crisp, with that awesome fuji colour and skin tones. I shot RAW + JPEG, which gave me some really perfect jpeg images straight out of the box, but  I also had the Raw file for those times when I needed a bit more latitude in post processing.

Overall I was super impressed and a little surprised at how well this little Fuji did. The camera is so small and discrete but has Fullframe comparable image quality, with an amazing selection of quality compact lenses. I think it won’t be too long , until Fuji produces an X-Camera that I would be happy to use full time at weddings. Indeed they may be there already by all accounts of the new Fuji X-T1…. but I haven’t got one of those…. yet ….  😉
